a. Cars must be built using the materials in the Official Pinewood Derby Racing Car Kit. This includes the pinewood block, axles, and wheels. With the exception of decorative and construction items (weights, glue, lubricants, finishing materials), only materials from the official kit may be used. Separately purchased items (contoured pinewood bodies, machined wheels, polished axles) are specifically prohibited.
b. Cars must be built after November 1, 1997 for entry in the January, 1998 Pack 835 Derby. Cars made for prior races are not allowed.
c. Maximum overall width (including wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
d. Minimum width between wheels shall be 1-3/4 inches so the car will clear the center guide strip.
e. Minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the bottom of the wheels shall be 3/8 inch so the can will clear the center guide strip.
f. Maximum length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
g. Maximum height of the car shall not exceed 5-1/2 inches.
h. The wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles) may not be changed from the body kit distance of 4-1/4 inches.
i. Cars may not protrude beyond the starting post.
a. Weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces (141.7 grams). The readings of the Official Race Scale will be considered final. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided it is securely built into the body or firmly affixed to it. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.
b. Details such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler, decals, painting, and interior details are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, and weight specifications.
c. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
a. Only the official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used. Axles may be polished. Wheels may be lightly sanded to remove the mold projection on the tread. This light sanding is the only wheel modification allowed. Beveling, tapering, thin sanding, wafering or lathe turning of the wheels is prohibited.
b. Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are prohibited.
c. Car shall not ride on any type of springs.
d. Cars must be free wheeling with no starting device or other propulsion.
a. Only dry powdered lubricants, such as graphite, may be used. Regular oils and silicon sprays may soften the plastic wheels.
b. Cars may be lubricated before inspection and between heats. No other lubrication will be permitted.
a. Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Team before it may compete. The Inspection Team has the right to disqualify those cars which do not meet these rules. Car owners will be informed of any violations and given an opportunity to modify the car to meet these rules.
b. Cars can be reinspected at any time. If the car does not meet specifications, it must be brought into compliance before the last heat of that race or be disqualified.
c. Any participant (including a parent of a participant) has the right to appeal to the Judging Committee for an interpretation of these rules. The Judging Committee, by majority vote, will be the final interpreter of these rules. In case of a tie vote, the decision of the Race Committee Chairperson will be final.
d. Ungentlemanly or unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or member of the audience will be grounds for expulsion from the competition and/or the race area.
a. The race is open to all Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts registered in Pack 835.
b. Cars must have been made for this race. Cars made prior to November 1997 are not permitted.
c. The race will begin with a double elimination in order first in ascending alphabetical order, then in descending order.. The 16 fastest cars will compete in a final double elimination to identify the three fastest cars. Tiger Cubs and siblings will race between the first and second eliminations.
d. If a car jumps off the track, the heat will be run again. If the same car jumps off the track a second time, it will automatically lose the heat with a time of 9.999 seconds.
e. If a car leaves its lane and interferes with another car, the heat wil lbe run again. If the same car leaves its lane a second time and interferes with another car, the heat will be run again without the interfering car. The interfering car will automatically lose the heat with a time of 9.999 seconds.
f. If a car suffers a mechanical problem (loses an axle, breaks a wheel, etc.) and a repair can be accomplished before the last heat of that elimination, the car will run in a later heat. Otherwise the car will lose the heat with a time of 9.999 seconds.
g. The winner of the heat will be determined by the official track timer. The results of the timer will be considered final.
h. Only race officials and boys racing in that heat will be permitted in the registration and track area. This rule will be strictly enforced.
a. Boys who are unable to appear at the race due to schedule conflicts, may still participate through a proxy. The proxy may be an adult leader, parent or guardian, sibling, or another Cub Scout.
b. In order to participate by proxy, the Cub Scout must complete a proxy form (available from their den leader), certifying that they built their car, who their proxy is, and whether or not their proxy is authorized to modify the car prior to the race to meet specifications.
c. At the end of the race, the car, if not impounded for the District Pinewood Derby, will be returned with any prizes to the proxy.
