Bridge Building Checklist

Purpose:

To restart Cub Scouting after the summer. To acquaint boys new to Scouting with their dens. To build teamwork within each den.

Bring:

12 bridge blanks (2 6-inch 1x6s glued to the ends of a 6x12-inch piece of cardboard) 12 packages of 50 straws 12 rolls of masking tape 12 scissors 15 bricks (the same size) A six by six square piece of carpet A one foot square piece of plywood 12 sets of bridge building rules

Do:

1. Open the meeting and conduct normal business.
2. Explain the rules of the contest and set the time limit.
3. Physically separate the dens and request one boy from each to come forward.
4. Give each boy a bridge blank, roll of tape, scissors, and package of straws.
5. Shout "Go!" and start clock.
6. Monitor the dens.
7. Give a five minute warning.
8. Confiscate left over tape, straws, and scissors.
9. Form the boys in a large circle around the carpet square.
10. Place plywood square in middle of carpet.
11. One by one, place each bridge on the square and load it with bricks until it collapses.
12. Record the number of bricks each bridge held before it collapsed.
13. Announce the winners.
14. Thank parents and boys for coming for coming.
15. Give date, place and time of next meeting.
16. Do closing.
17. Reset room and clean up.
